De-amalgamation in 2025/2026 increased chiefdoms to a total of 190. These mergers, primarily created by British colonial authorities to reduce administrative costs, are being reversed to restore the original, smaller, and historically linked chiefdoms.

The government of Sierra Leone is actively de-amalgamating colonial-era amalgamated chiefdoms, a process that saw 41 new chiefdoms created around 2017 and further, widespread de-amalgamation as of 2025/2026 to increase the total to 190.
